Finger Joint Wood – Premium Quality Wood for Export
What is Finger Joint Wood?
Finger joint wood, also known as laminated wood panels or finger-jointed boards, is an engineered wood product made by joining small natural wood slats with specialized adhesives. These wood slats are then pressed under standard pressure and temperature, forming large, highly durable, and solid wooden panels.
The finger joint connection is designed in an interlocking pattern, ensuring a strong bond between the wood slats, reducing warping and cracking, and guaranteeing long-term durability. Finger joint wood is often mistaken for box joints, but these are two different techniques—box joints are mainly used in wooden box manufacturing and structural frames.
History and Development
Finger joint wood has been around for a long time, but its manufacturing technology significantly advanced in the 1970s. Today, Europe is the largest producer of finger joint wood, followed by North America, South America, and Asia. Vietnam has emerged as a leading producer, offering the best balance between cost and quality.
Composition of Finger Joint Wood
Finger joint wood is produced from various types of natural wood, with the most common being:
✔ Acacia wood – High durability, excellent load-bearing capacity
✔ Rubberwood – Affordable, eco-friendly
✔ Pine, cedar, and oak – Preferred for high-end furniture production
Types of Adhesives Used
✔ Urea Formaldehyde (UF) – Strong adhesion, ideal for indoor furniture
✔ Phenol Formaldehyde (PF) – Water-resistant, suitable for outdoor applications
✔ Polyvinyl Acetate (PVAc) – Non-toxic, environmentally safe
Finger Joint Wood Production Process
Step 1: Wood Drying
- Removes resin, sap, and moisture to prevent mold and termites.
- Moisture content is adjusted to 10% ± 2%, meeting export standards.
Step 2: Cutting and Joint Formation
- Wood slats are cut to standard sizes:
- Width: 600 mm
- Length: 2200 mm
- Thickness: 26 mm
- Two common joint types:
- Vertical finger joint – Stronger structure but visible joints
- Horizontal finger joint – Higher aesthetic appeal
Step 3: Planing and Surface Treatment
- Wood slats are planed for a smooth, even surface, ready for jointing.
Step 4: Adhesive Application & Jointing
- Koyobon D4 glue (Japan) is used for superior water resistance and bonding strength.
- Wood is pressed tightly using a hydraulic press, forming standard-sized finger joint panels.
Step 5: Sanding & Surface Finishing
- Panels are sanded on both sides to achieve a smooth surface, ready for painting or veneer application.
Step 6: Quality Inspection
- Products are tested according to U.S., Australian, and EU export standards before packaging.
