Finger Joint Wood – High-Quality Wood Solution for International Export

What is Finger Joint Wood?

Finger joint wood, also known as finger joint board, is an engineered wood product made by bonding multiple small natural wood strips with specialized adhesives. Once assembled, these pieces are compressed under standardized temperature and pressure, forming durable and structurally stable wood panels.

Thanks to its finger joint interlocking design, the wood strips are tightly connected, reducing warping, cracking, and increasing the longevity of the product. Many people mistakenly confuse finger joint wood with box joints, but these are two different techniques. Box joints are mainly used in wooden frames or box manufacturing.

The Evolution & Growth of Finger Joint Wood

Finger joint wood has been in use for a long time, but its industrial development only took off in the 1970s, thanks to technological advancements in manufacturing. Today, Europe is the largest producer of finger joint wood, followed by North America, South America, and Asia.

In recent years, Vietnam has emerged as one of the leading suppliers of finger joint wood, thanks to its abundant raw materials, cost-effective production, and internationally certified quality standards.

Composition of Finger Joint Wood

Common Wood Types Used:

Acacia: High durability, excellent load-bearing capacity
Rubberwood: Cost-effective and eco-friendly
Pine, cedar, and oak: Ideal for premium furniture production

Types of Adhesives Used:

Urea Formaldehyde (UF): Strong adhesion, ideal for interior applications
Phenol Formaldehyde (PF): Excellent water resistance, suitable for outdoor use
Polyvinyl Acetate (PVAc): Safe for health and environmentally friendly

Finger Joint Wood Manufacturing Process

🔹 Step 1: Wood Drying

  • Removes resin, sap, and excess moisture to prevent mold, termites, and decay.
  • Maintains moisture content at 10% ± 2%, meeting export standards.

🔹 Step 2: Cutting & Finger Joint Profiling

  • Standard dimensions:
    • Width: 600 mm
    • Length: 2400 mm
    • Thickness: 36 mm
  • Two common types of finger joints:
    • Vertical joints (exposed joints): Enhance structural durability but leave visible seams.
    • Horizontal joints (concealed joints): Provide a seamless and aesthetically pleasing finish.

🔹 Step 3: Planing & Surface Preparation

  • The wood strips are precisely planed, creating a smooth and even surface for jointing.

🔹 Step 4: Adhesive Application & Jointing

  • Uses Koyobon D4 adhesive from Japan, ensuring water resistance and strong bonding.
  • The wood pieces are compressed using hydraulic presses, forming solid, high-quality wood panels customized to customer specifications.

🔹 Step 5: Sanding & Surface Finishing

  • The wood panels are sanded on both sides to create a smooth surface, ready for painting or veneer application.

🔹 Step 6: Quality Inspection

  • The products undergo strict quality control to meet export standards for the USA, Australia, and the EU before packaging.
