Finger Joint Wood – The Perfect Choice for High-Quality Export

What is Finger Joint Wood?

Finger joint wood, also known as finger joint board, is an engineered wood product made by bonding small natural wood pieces with specialized adhesives. These wood pieces are then pressed under standardized pressure and temperature to create large wood panels with high durability and strong structural integrity.

Designed with interlocking finger joints, this type of wood ensures a tight connection, minimizing warping, cracking, and increasing product longevity. Many people confuse finger joint wood with box joints, but these are two distinct techniques—box joints are primarily used in wooden box manufacturing or structural frameworks.

The Evolution of Finger Joint Wood

Finger joint wood has been used for a long time, but its industrial development only accelerated in the 1970s with advancements in production technology. Today, Europe is the world’s largest producer of finger joint wood, followed by North America, South America, and Asia.

Vietnam is emerging as a leading producer of finger joint wood, thanks to affordable costs and high-quality production standards.

Composition of Finger Joint Wood

Common Wood Materials Used:

Acacia (tràm) – High durability, strong load-bearing capacity
Rubberwood – Cost-effective and eco-friendly
Pine, cedar, and oak – Preferred for premium furniture manufacturing

Types of Adhesives Used:

Urea Formaldehyde (UF) – Strong adhesion, suitable for interior applications
Phenol Formaldehyde (PF) – Water-resistant, ideal for outdoor use
Polyvinyl Acetate (PVAc) – Safe for health, environmentally friendly

Finger Joint Wood Production Process

🔹 Step 1: Wood Drying

  • Removes resin, sap, and moisture to prevent mold and termite infestation.
  • Maintains a moisture content of 10% ± 2%, meeting export standards.

🔹 Step 2: Cutting & Finger Joint Profiling

  • Standard dimensions:
    • Width: 600 mm
    • Length: 2400 mm
    • Thickness: 36 mm
  • Two common types of finger joints:
    • Vertical joints (exposed joints): Enhance structural durability but leave visible seams.
    • Horizontal joints (concealed joints): Provide a smoother, more aesthetic finish.

🔹 Step 3: Planing & Surface Preparation

  • The wood pieces are finely planed for an even and smooth surface, ready for joining.

🔹 Step 4: Adhesive Application & Jointing

  • Uses Koyobon D4 adhesive from Japan, ensuring water resistance and strong bonding.
  • The wood pieces are pressed together using hydraulic machines, forming solid panels according to customer specifications.

🔹 Step 5: Sanding & Surface Finishing

  • The wood panels are sanded on both sides to achieve a smooth surface, ready for painting or veneer application.

🔹 Step 6: Quality Inspection

  • Products are tested to meet export standards for the USA, Australia, and the EU before packaging.

Finger Joint Wood Classification by Quality

🏆 Grade AB – Export Standard
✔ Flawless top surface, minor black spots (≤ 10mm) on the bottom surface.

Grade AC-AD – Medium Quality
✔ Smooth top surface, bottom surface with larger imperfections (> 10mm).

🔨 Grade BC – Structural Applications
✔ Minor imperfections on both sides, suitable for flooring, doors, wooden frames, and outdoor furniture.

🏗 Grade CD – Industrial Use
✔ More visible defects, ideal for subflooring and veneer lamination.
