Finger Joint Wood – The Ideal Choice for High-Quality Wood Exports
What is Finger Joint Wood?
Finger joint wood, also known as finger joint board, is an engineered wood product created by bonding multiple small wood strips using specialized adhesives. Once joined, these pieces are compressed under standardized temperature and pressure, forming durable and structurally stable wooden panels.
With an interlocking finger joint design, this type of wood ensures strong bonding, effectively reducing warping, cracking, and increasing product longevity. Many people often confuse finger joint wood with box joints, but these are two completely different techniques. Box joints are primarily used in wooden frame construction or box production.
The Formation & Development of Finger Joint Wood
Finger joint wood has been around for a long time, but it only began to experience significant growth in the 1970s, thanks to technological advancements in manufacturing. Today, Europe is the largest producer of finger joint wood, followed by North America, South America, and Asia.
Vietnam is gradually becoming one of the leading suppliers of finger joint wood, benefiting from abundant raw materials, competitive pricing, and internationally recognized quality standards.
Composition of Finger Joint Wood
Common Wood Types Used:
✔ Acacia (tràm): High strength, excellent durability
✔ Rubberwood: Cost-effective and eco-friendly
✔ Pine, cedar, and oak: Popular for premium furniture production
Types of Adhesives Used:
✔ Urea Formaldehyde (UF): Strong adhesion, ideal for interior applications
✔ Phenol Formaldehyde (PF): Excellent water resistance, suitable for outdoor use
✔ Polyvinyl Acetate (PVAc): Safe for health and environmentally friendly
Finger Joint Wood Manufacturing Process
🔹 Step 1: Wood Drying
- Removes resin, sap, and excess moisture to prevent mold and termite damage.
- Maintains moisture content at 10% ± 2%, meeting export quality standards.
🔹 Step 2: Cutting & Finger Joint Profiling
- Standard dimensions:
- Width: 900 mm
- Length: 2400 mm
- Thickness: 38 mm
- Two types of finger joints:
- Vertical joints (exposed joints): Enhance structural durability but leave visible seams.
- Horizontal joints (concealed joints): Provide a seamless and more visually appealing finish.
🔹 Step 3: Planing & Surface Preparation
- The wood strips are precisely planed, creating a smooth and even surface for jointing.
🔹 Step 4: Adhesive Application & Jointing
- Uses Koyobon D4 adhesive from Japan, ensuring water resistance and strong adhesion.
- Wood pieces are compressed with hydraulic presses, forming solid, high-quality wood panels tailored to customer specifications.
🔹 Step 5: Sanding & Surface Finishing
- The wood panels are sanded on both sides to achieve a smooth finish, ready for painting or veneer application.
🔹 Step 6: Quality Inspection
- Products undergo strict quality control to ensure compliance with export standards for the USA, Australia, and the EU before packaging.
Finger Joint Wood Classification by Quality
🏆 Grade AB – Export Standard

🔨 Grade BC – Structural Applications
✔ Minor defects on both sides, suitable for flooring, doors, wooden frames, and outdoor furniture.
🏗 Grade CD – Industrial Use
✔ More visible imperfections, best suited for subflooring or veneer lamination.
